Faith of our Fathers: The Theologies of the American Presidency

President Andrew Jackson

The Seventh President of the United States of America

Served from 1829-1837

Lived 1767-1845

Party: Democratic

Denomination: Presbyterian

President Andrew Jackson was a Populist through and through. His Populist agenda led to great successes, but the Indian Removal Act severely tarnished his legacy–there is currently a campaign led by Indigenous persons to have his likeness replaced on the 20 dollar bill.

For all the just and righteous indignation and controversy surrounding Jackson’s presidency, he was An ardent believer in religious pluralism and freedom. President Jackson elected not to declare a national day of prayer while in office. He would, however have a deeply moving conversion experience upon leaving the White House. Despite this conversion, he would never show remorse for his treatment of Indigenous persons across his administration.
