Faith of our Fathers: The Theologies of the American Presidency

The Twenty-Ninth President of the United States of America

Lived 1865-1923

Though the Wilson Presidency was full of foreign developments abroad, the White House was largely quiet during those years. This would especially prove true during the years that Wilson was bedridden from the stroke he suffered in October of 1919. When President Harding came to power in 1921, that all changed. The start of the Roaring 20’s met their match in President Harding, as he personified so much of what that meant. A frequent purveyor of drink and gambling, along with being a philanderer with multiple women, President Harding is famous for accidentally gambling away a set of the White House china that dated back to President Benjamin Harrison’s administration.

Though President Harding’s time in office and proclivities were problematic at best, the 29th President was known to have regularly taught Sunday School and served as a Baptist deacon at his church. He was ardently (at least publicly) supportive of prohibition due to his religious affiliation but that was not held to in private, as with many Americans of the time.
