Lyndon B. Johnson was the second United States President since 1945 to assume office upon the death of a sitting president. President Johnson’s initial priorities were ensuring that President Kennedy’s policies and ideals were cemented in the American consciousness. However conflict abroad, specifically in Vietnam would cause his time in office to be marred by despair and conflict.

President Johnson had a Baptist upbringing but would find himself a member of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and was baptized in a river not far from where his ranch would be located. While serving in Washington D.C. he attended National City Christian Church. According to the LBJ library, President Johnson’s favorite Bible verse he often quoted was Isaiah 1:8, “Come now, and let us reason together.”
